Mineral intelligence
Tantalite / Coltan mining assets in Africa
Tantalum is small in volume and large in consequence: it is in nearly every phone and every advanced electronic system, and its supply chain is under formal scrutiny.
STRATUM does not yet publish verified tantalite assets. Intelligence on this mineral is gathered continuously, and members are notified as assets clear verification.
What members see
Grades and assay results, resource and reserve estimates, evidence provenance, deal structure, infrastructure and power, and the geospatial layer. Identity of the operator is released only to compliance-cleared members on an approved request.
Tantalite mining: uses, market and Africa’s position
What tantalite is
Tantalum is recovered from columbite tantalite, commonly called coltan, a heavy oxide mineral found in granitic pegmatites. Niobium occurs alongside it in the same mineral series, and the two are separated downstream. Because the mineral is dense, it is amenable to gravity recovery, which is why artisanal production is significant.
What tantalite is used for
Capacitors
Tantalum capacitors store more charge in less space than the alternatives, which is why they persist in phones, laptops, medical implants and aerospace electronics.
Superalloys
Tantalum raises the temperature resistance of alloys used in turbine components.
Medical implants
Tantalum is exceptionally biocompatible and is used in surgical implants and prosthetics.
Carbide tools
Tantalum carbide hardens cutting tools operating at high speed.
Tantalite market outlook
Tantalum demand tracks electronics manufacturing, but the defining feature of this market is provenance. Conflict minerals regulation in the United States and the European Union means Western buyers must document where their tantalum originated. Verified, traceable material from a legitimate licensed operation is therefore commercially distinct from material that cannot demonstrate its chain of custody.
Tantalite in Africa
Central Africa dominates world tantalum supply, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda the largest sources. Nigeria also produces tantalite from its pegmatite belt, frequently alongside tin and lithium from the same systems.
What to check on a tantalite asset
For a tantalite asset, verify the tantalum pentoxide grade in the concentrate and the niobium to tantalum ratio, because they price differently. Above all, verify provenance documentation. In this commodity, chain of custody is not administrative overhead, it is the difference between reaching a Western buyer and not.
